There's literally nothing you can do about it. It's an Curse with the typical "Unplayable", but a keyword (I have yet to see elsewhere) called "Inescapable", which says "Will remain in your deck even if you discard, exhaust, transform, or remove this card".Īnd it REALLY means it. My strongest reccomendation is to ax it in a patch. but boy, it's a HUGE stain on what'd otherwise be a glowing appraisal of the game's design. and I'm not even saying "I'mma rage quit & review bomb", I still like the game overall. While I feel like I've made a well-reasoned case, this is of course just my take. That one card/mechanic is adversely affecting a larger component of the game. And that's such a severe detriment, it basically renders the virtues of the Curse system above moot, because in "Risk vs Reward" calculus, Despair makes the answer to every such option "Not worth it", because it's such a run-killer that there's essentially NOTHING that can be done to negate it, only mitigate it. there's not enough means of adapting to it, you're just. It's effects are too far outside the player's control. Up until the moment I got saddled with a Despair.īasically never gonna take random curses again now. In that sense, I classify the Curse system as one of the more clever aspects of the game's design. Which given the random nature of the talent tree, seems like an intentional priority. it's a well designed mechanic that rewards changing up your strats between runs and forcing players out of their comfort zone (and thus to experience different play-styles). you have to weigh your options of risk vs reward on events threatening them, maybe tune your deck/talents to accommodate them and then alter your strategy accordingly. Here's the thing: Curses and playing around them is an interesting part of this game. I'd posit the card/mechanic isn't just "frustrating" or "one I don't like", I gotta put it under a label of "objective bad design" While I'm not red-in-the-face angry, I'm not being hyperbolic either, to be clear. There's no fixing it, I just want it out of the game. Discuss your favorite titles, find a new one to play or share the game you developed.Like my critical standard is typically that you shouldn't hate on a card/keyword unless you can suggest a tweak to improve it.
